Scheduled trips
Do you want to experience Austrian Alps,
but you only have a short time to do it? Go on a day journey with an experienced
multilingual hiking guide to explore by snowshoes the accessible
and beautiful styrian mountain range
(Upper Styria and its surroundings).
These tours are perfect if you are looking to get out for a few hours into
the solitude and beauty of the winter backcountry and the mountains in
winter at a leisurely pace.
With snowshoes you can move along at a slow pace, often where no one else
is, and even venture off trail to explore forests and frozen lakes below
snow covered summits of extraordinary beauty, away from the crowds that
make up the ski slope scene.
Snowshoes are also an ideal way to view winter wildlife.
You need no experience
to strap on a pair of snowshoes and have your guide teach you the basics
of this simple mode of winter travel. Within minutes you will feel right
at home tromping along behind your guide into a new environment.
All one day long excursions without lodging, returning to your hotel in
the evening take place every week end during the months of late November
thru mid April. They typically begin at 8 am and last about 5-6 hours (walking
time).

Snowshoeing and winter snow camping (igloo and snow cave construction)
Some of
my snowshoeing trips are combined with winter snow camping sessions.
During
those days, you will learn the skills
needed for overnight winter camping, including igloo and snow cave
construction and basic survival techniques for winter travel.
The
sites that are used for the course are usually close to the trailhead and
do not require more than 2-3 hours of approach on snowshoes. This allows
for more time to be spent building igloos, snow caves and setting up our
winter camp!
The first field day is spent approaching a backcountry base camp area.
Locations are chosen that
will require minimum travel times. After camp is reached you will spend
time building a variety of snow shelters such as snow caves and igloos.
The main emphasis is to learn and practice skills for establishing a good
winter camp.
Day-2
will provide an opportunity to go for a tour and explore the fantastic winter backcountry.
The
field sessions are held in a variety of locations based on current snow,
weather and backcountry conditions. The actual location will be determined
a few days prior to the course start.
